I have removed the Soundblaster Live card from my Dell Dimension as it is not supported by the Linux operating system that I use.

The onboard integrated sound chip is however, and a large number of Unix and Linux users are using these integrated Intel sound chips successfully with no problems. Unfortunately, there seems to be an issue in that although I have removed the original sound card and re-enabled onboard sound in the BIOS and, of course, removed the blanking plate covering its external connectors the integrated sound chip is not working.

I understand from postings elsewhere that Dell may also, in addition to disabling onboard sound in the BIOS, make another change on the motherboard via either a connector or jumper to disable onboard sound when sound cards are installed.

Having removed the sound card and re-enabled onboard sound in the BIOS, I now wish to re-enable onboard integrated sound fully. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what I need to do please?

A URL to a technical document, or step by step instructions posted here, would be ideal. Many thanks. All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. Flooby 5 Tungsten. YaST2 did not work, so How to change root password in unix had been running alsaconf as root which appeared to detect the device and configure it.

However, when alsaconf during this process appeared to play a small test. Completely be accident, I repeated the process and ran alsamixer as root and this resolved the issue; the alsamixer interface appeared, unmuting could be carried out and levels set. Afterwards, alsamixer can be run as a normal user as usual. Quite so. It is actually worth pointing out too that, now that it is working, the sound quality available from the onboard audio chip is of very high indeed, actually better than most soundcards that I have heard albeit that I do not play games, and only listen to music CDs in "normal" two channel stereo.

I can pay the onboard chip no higher compliment. Dell Support Resources.

The only BIOS settings for the sound card are under the southbridge settings and there is no enable option for the card at all which is wrong. There should be an option for it under the on-board devices section.
